The Home Energy Savings offering provides free home assessments and energy-saving products to help you save energy and reduce your monthly utility bills. Based on your eligibility, you may qualify for an in-home or online self-assessment.
In-home Assessments
What is an in-home assessment?
The in-home assessment is a free in-person review of your home to identify opportunities to save energy. In-home assessments are available to customers who provide their income information during the scheduling process and whose total household income is 80% of the area median income or below.
An energy advisor will assess your home’s current energy use by looking at your lighting, heating and cooling systems, water heater, insulation levels and appliances. The energy advisor will then provide you with a personalized report recommending additional ways to save energy and money. During the assessment, the energy advisor may install the following FREE energy-saving products:
- LED bulbs
- Programmable and ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostats
- WaterSense® certified showerheads and showerhead flow optimizers
- WaterSense® certified faucet aerators for bathrooms and kitchens
- Hot water pipe insulation
- Door sweeps
After the appointment you may also receive FREE advanced power strips, smart sockets and air filter replacements for self-install.
Only with an in-home assessment can eligible customers qualify to receive additional improvements including free weatherization services.
Who is eligible for an in-home assessment?
To be eligible for an in-home assessment, total household income must be at or below 80% Area Median Income (AMI).
AMI varies based on location. The chart below describes the maximum qualifying household income for most of the Chicago metropolitan area.

6 | $104,100 |

Income eligible customers living in single-family homes, two-flats, condos, mobile homes, manufactured homes and townhomes may receive a free in-home assessment plus free energy-saving products. Qualifying customers may be eligible to receive additional improvements including free weatherization services. Homes must have ComEd, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas and/or North Shore Gas service. Renters in these building types must obtain the property owner’s permission prior to the assessment. Individually-owned and metered condo units may be served through Home Energy Savings with some limitations.
Tenants of multi-family buildings (three units or more) can learn about assessment offerings in the Multi-Family Energy Savings.
An online self-assessment tool is available for non-income-eligible customers.

The standard Home Energy Savings in-home assessment typically lasts 60 – 90 minutes but may vary depending on the size of your home.
